Wedding Proposal 411

Whether you’re getting ready to propose, getting ready to be proposed to, or just enjoy great engagement stories, we all know that women have their preferences when it comes to men popping that fabulously famous question, “Will you marry me?”.

Most women say that the #1 faux pas when proposing is doing so with no ring. While it’s hard to believe that some men would even dream of showing up without a ring, it has happened before. Here are some interesting facts about the history of the engagement ring to back up the fact that these little accessories are a tried and true symbol of love:

  •     The tradition of wearing an engagement ring began in Ancient Egypt and was used to symbolize a never-ending bond between the couple.
  •     Rings were placed on the fourth finger of the left hand because Ancient Egyptians believed that it contained a vein that lead directly to the heart.
  •     While the Egyptians started the tradition, it didn’t stick. Diamond engagement rings weren’t typically given until the 1930s.

So, now that everyone knows that rings are a must in this situation, how does one go about proposing? Even though it’s difficult to trace bended-knee proposals throughout history, kneeling is often considered a sign of respect – whether it’s receiving a medal or award, kneeling during religious ceremonies or bowing down to surrender during war. According to statistics, 49% of women say it’s absolutely essential to propose on bended knee. So, men – it’s a sign of respect to get down on one knee!

What’s said during a proposal is often going to stick with the woman being proposed to. It should be a summary of all the things true and great in a relationship, and a promise to endure and find happiness in tough times in the years to come. 68% of women remember what was said during the proposal, so we’re assuming the other 32% are just too captivated by their gorgeous rings to recall what their significant other professed.

Choosing what’s going to be said may hinge on where you decide to pop the question. Since only 10% of women say they would want to be proposed to at a sporting event, a quiet place (somewhere far away from a sports arena) is an ideal location. But – there are a few women out there that will enjoy the attention, and actually may like being proposed to in a louder place. It’s up to the fellow to decide.

No matter what, women – 88% to be exact – feel that the “surprise factor” is important when proposing. Whether it’s a small surprise or a large bombshell, it’s necessary it comes from out of the blue to get that “wow” factor.

After all is said and done, a proposal is a truly magical event in people’s lives. 83% of women say that they loved the way their man proposed and wouldn’t change a thing.

When the pressure and planning of the proposal is finished, it’s time for the wedding preparation to begin. Whether you’re simply shopping for wedding invitations with your significant other or choosing a DJ for the wedding, it’s crucial to treasure each and every moment along the way.

Elegant Fall Weddings in Chocolate

Calling all fall brides!  Now is the time to begin your search for the perfect wedding invitation, as your fall wedding is likely less than six months away!  Your invitations should be mailed to your guests about two and a half months before your event, and you will need a few weeks to address your invitation envelopes, which means summer makes the perfect time to choose your wedding invitation.  Remember to also allow a few weeks to order, proof and receive your wedding invitations, too!

One of the most popular wedding color combinations for the fall bride is chocolate and ivory…mixing the most traditional wedding color, (ivory), with one of the more modern wedding colors today, (chocolate).  The combination of these two crisp and clean colors gives off an essence of elegance and class, along with sophistication and style – and the perfect setting for your fall wedding!  As soon as your guests open your invitation envelope they will realize what a special and momentous even is ahead.

It was always amazing to me that once a bride’s wedding colors were picked, the rest of her wedding theme and ensemble soon fell into place and complimented one another.  Once you have chosen your wedding colors, begin the search for the perfect wedding invitation.  My wedding invitation collection features a variety of themes and options to help you narrow down your search for the perfect ensemble.  You can browse my fall wedding invitations, chocolate wedding invitations or ivory wedding invitations to start.

My chocolate and ivory wedding invitations feature popular fall designs and patterns featuring fall leaves, sunflowers, chocolate satin ribbons, pine-cone branches and classic ivory cards with chocolate writing and subtle accent details.  Be sure that your invitation gives your guests a preview to the formality of your event, along with your wedding theme, as it will set the tone for your entire wedding event.

I created the above montage for our lovely chocolate & ivory wedding brides today, in hopes that it will give you a bit of inspiration for creating your own perfect wedding, exactly the way you envisioned it!  I found some great illustrations online that inspired me to create it, featuring an alternating tiered cake in ivory and chocolate, a wedding cake chocolate favor for your guests and a chocolate linen wedding reception with ivory napkin and chair details.  Dress your bridal party in chocolate tuxes and deep mocha dresses with slight ivory details popping through.  And remember that the ivory wedding gown is a popular couture trend we’re seeing for the modern bride, which brings back a vintage elegance with a modern style when compared to the traditional white wedding gown. Let your shoes match your dress and wedding style with an antique ivory lace, and be sure to heat things up with a chocolate and ivory garter for your wedding reception, (or after)!

Make your wedding a moment to remember for all guests and begin the memory with one of our fabulous chocolate wedding invitations, to create a little inspiration for your entire event!

Weekly Wrapup and Reviews

Well as much as I hate to admit it, I am back in the swing of work again after the cruise. This week I've been gearing up for Fall Weddings and Events. It's been great being creative after clearing my head during our vacation.

Some of my more popular Fall wedding Invitation suites might give you some inspiration if you are still looking. :)

For this week's review - I chose:

Pine Cone Nature Wedding Invitation

Pine_cone_nature_wedding

This beautiful design, called Pine Cone Nature Wedding, is a beautiful way to set the tone for your modern but elegant wedding or event. The background is a bright white. In the upper right corner there is a pretty line drawing of pine cones on a branch. This would be an amazing invitation for your rustic, outdoor, or country themed wedding. Most of my wedding sets have invitations, save the date cards, response cards, thank you cards, table number tent cards, envelope seals, wine labels, binders, envelopes, and return address labels available. Use the envelope seal stickers for any of your DIY gifts - these are available in both large and small sizes!

From a very happy bride, Kayla:

"We are getting married in the Adirondack Mountains so this invitation was perfect for us. We chose the white linen paper, which makes the invitations look and feel high quality. We also liked that we could print on the back of the invitation as well. We put our Reception info on the back so we did not have to purchase additional Reception cards...a great money saver!..."

Halloween and Gothic Themed Weddings

Ready to take ‘Til death do us part…’ to the literal level?  Believe it or not, Halloween themed weddings have been an increasingly popular wedding theme for the modern fall bride.  Maybe you have a dark side, maybe you met on Halloween, or maybe you just have an odd fetish with this eerie holiday – whatever the reason, we think it’s an amazingly fun, unique and exciting wedding theme, and we’ve got the perfect Halloween or Gothic wedding invitations to help you set the scene.

When you think of Halloween, you may think of the gory, iconic or scary side of the holiday…but getting married on Halloween doesn’t have to mean dressing up like the bride of Frankenstein or having a white dress covered in fake red blood, (but if that’s your style – go for it)!  Most of my Halloween brides use the beautiful and striking color palette from Halloween to decorate their event, from a black wedding dress from Vera Wang to elegant table tops with antique embroidered ivory lace and large candelabras.  The most popular Halloween wedding colors are accents of black, ivory, white and burnt orange.

The word “vintage” often comes to mind when I think of a Halloween themed wedding, too.  From large chandeliers to elegant table spreads and tree branch decor, your fall wedding can have a completely dark, elegant and vintage look to create a formal Halloween event.  Host your ceremony at twilight to create a bit of ambiance, and to highlight your unique wedding theme.  Serve up pumpkin soup or some fall food favorites, and send your guests home with a bit of candy corn or Halloween candy.

My Halloween wedding invitations range from eerie and dark to contemporary and modern.  I also have really fun Halloween invitations which can be great for Halloween bridal shower invitations featuring witches at moon-fall, iconic patterned borders and ribbon accents.

Check out some of my most popular Halloween wedding invitations below and share your Halloween wedding ideas with me – I'm dying to hear them!

A Winter Wedding: Tips and Inspiration

In the movies, everyone seems to get married in June. A winter wedding can be just glamorous and magical. With the right elements, your winter wedding will be a wonderland.

How Should You Dress?
Think about you and your sweetie in the elegant look of old Hollywood; the groom in tails, and the bride in a white long silk dress with a white fur or faux fur wrap. Evoke the season with "ice" –diamond or diamond-like jewelry. 90% of wedding dresses are strapless or sleeveless, but that's not so practical for a bride who wants to take pictures outside, or needs to walk any distance. Look for wraps, shrugs, and capes, or dramatic coats. I've always loved the look of a bride in a white dress and a large red shawl, huddled against her groom who has a red boutonnière. And don't forget your bridesmaids! An attractive wrap to wear on the day of your wedding and beyond makes a great bridesmaid present.

Where to Have a Winter Wedding
Look for an inn with a fireplace for an intimate winter wedding. For a larger affair, you may be able to use a historic mansion or private club that will still have intimate warmth. Unless you're getting married in a state that will have guaranteed snow during your wedding date, avoid a room that has a large picture window. You may imagine drifts of beautiful snow, and end up with a grey rainy day. Be sure to ask what seasonal decorations they use – you'll save money as many sites are already heavily decorated. Also, check to make sure your site will be adequately heated during the winter months; old churches can be especially drafty.

Planning the Menu
You can have all of your favorite food but add some winter touches like a squash dish, or warm pumpkin soup. Consider serving eggnog, spiced wine, or hot chocolate (alcoholic or non-) as special treats. Look for an all-white cake, decorated with snowflake patterns, silver embellishments, or sugar sculptures. Ask your caterer about using a decorative snow globe as a cake topper

Winter Wedding Flowers
Decide whether you want to go for a silver and white elegant look, or celebrate the season with reds and greens. For those who like silver, look for dusty miller, silver-dollar eucalyptus, and baby blue eucalyptus, mixed with white flowers such as roses, football mums, crocus, lilies and stephanotis. If you're looking for a brighter bouquet, consider red roses with holly and pine-tree greenery. In season flowers such as tulips, roses, and ornamental berries generally will be less expensive choices. (Talk to your florist, as your region may have different availability)

The Décor for Your Winter Wedding
Decorate your tables with simple and inexpensive white poinsettias, or fill the room with light by arranging pillar candles on a bed of pine branches At the after-Christmas sales, stock up on strands of small white lights, then string them decoratively around doorways, over tables and on archways. Bright red cranberries in a bowl surrounding floating candles make an easy and inexpensive centerpiece. Look at this article for other simple holiday centerpieces.. Or, decorate a pre-made gingerbread house for each table, and center it on a bed of greenery with candles around it.

Favors
If you and most of your guests celebrate Christmas, an ornament makes a perfect favor. An inexpensive homemade favor is a pretty tin of spiced hot chocolate mix or hot cocoa mix with marshmallows. Also consider a snow globe, with a bride and groom inside, or a holiday cookie cutter with a cookie recipe attached that says your names, wedding date, and "truly cut out for each other".

Special touches

  •     Have the bride and groom travel by horse and carriage to the reception, complete with a fur throw to keep them warm of course!
  •     Decorate the reception with miniature and life-size Christmas trees.
  •     Commission an ice sculpture to decorate the reception hall
  •     Use a crystal bouquet for that extra wintery feel. As a bonus, you'll get to keep your your bouquet forever.
  •     Greet your guests with warm coffee or hot chocolate as soon as they come in the ceremony or reception site.

Wedding Question of the Week

Can I indicate where I've registered for wedding gifts in my wedding invitations?

Slipping a wedding gift registry card into your invitation seems like the most sensible way to let your wedding guests know where you're registered right? Wrong. Even though the store you registered at gave you cards for this reason mentioning gifts of any kind in your wedding invitations is poor etiquette. Word of mouth is the only proper way to inform wedding guests where you are registered. So make sure you tell all of your closest friends, bridal party and family members where you're registered so they can inform other guests when asked and believe me they'll probably ask.
